A little chocolate every day is healthy. The flavanols lower blood pressure and greatly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke! Just don't go overboard.

Eggs are good for you -Even the chocolate kind!

Just in time for Easter!

In the largest observational study to date, researchers from the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Nuthetal, Germany have discovered that habitual chocolate eaters have significantly lower blood pressure and an amazingly lower risk for stroke than people who do not regularly eat chocolate.

During the eight year study, researchers monitored the diets and lifestyles of 19,357 people -35 through 65 years of age. The participants in the study were periodically weighed, measured and evaluated for changes in health, weight and blood pressure.

What the researchers found,
was that the participants consuming the most chocolate (averaging 7.5 grams daily) reduced their risk of heart attack and stroke by up to 39%!

The regular chocolate consumers also had lower blood pressure than their not so chocolate happy counterparts.

Lead author Dr Brian Buijsse (German Institute of Human Nutrition, Nuthetal, Germany) believes that if people were to increase their chocolate intake to only 6 g a day, 85 fewer heart attacks and strokes per 10,000 people could be expected to occur over a period of about 10 years. [1]

Dr Frank Ruschitzka (University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland) agrees. He said in a European Society of Cardiology statement: “Basic science has demonstrated quite convincingly that dark chocolate particularly, with a cocoa content of at least 70%, reduces oxidative stress and improves vascular and platelet function.” [1]

But don’t get carried away!

Enjoy a little chocolate -but just a little!

It’s all about balance.

Keep in mind that there are roughly 500 calories in every 100 grams of dark chocolate, so when you enjoy your healthful, flavanol rich chocolate -be sure you cut out an equivalent number of calories from another part of your diet.

A great way to ‘have your chocolate and eat it too,’ would be to cut grains and flour based foods from your diet. Many people are at least slightly allergic to the many allergens and antigens found in grains.

So indulge a little -but just a little….

Too much chocolate is just as bad as not enough.

To your Good Health!

“Athletes who want to decrease body fat and improve body composition should pay particular attention to dietary carbohydrate intake.”

Meat and Vegetables -All an Athlete needs for Nutritional Success!

This is the advice of Dr. Jeff Volek, Dr. Erin E. Quann and Dr. Cassandra Forsythe -all registered dietitians from the University of Connecticut as published in the February 2010 issue of the Strength and Conditioning Journal (Vol 32; No 1).

In their comprehensive study, the researchers were searching for a dietary strategy that allowed athletes to improve their body composition -defined as a greater muscle tissue to body fat ratio -while improving their physical strength and mental performance.

The researchers discovered that the old axiom “A calorie is a calorie” was wildly false. That in fact, the sources of dietary calories had significant impact on both body composition and physical performance -even while maintaining the same caloric intake.

The researchers concluded that “…diets lower in carbohydrate were associated with greater fat loss and diets higher in protein resulted in better preservation of lean body mass (muscle tissue) during weight loss. Furthermore, these effects were independent of energy intake (calories eaten) and participation in exercise (caloric expenditure).”

So what constitutes a “low carbohydrate diet?”

Fresh, lean meat….just add veggies!

Well, generally speaking consuming only lean meats, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables is close enough.

By eliminating dairy, grains, legumes (beans, peas, peanuts) and anything made with flour -you will have essentially established a very healthy, low carbohydrate diet. There is really not much need to track specifics. The ‘hunter-gatherer’ approach is one of the very best strategies towards a healthy body composition and improved physical performance.

For many folks…this seems extreme. But really, once you adapt to this strategy you will find that you have more energy, you sleep better and your clothes will begin to fit better too…

Just take a look at some of our satisfied customer’s testimonials here:

What makes us hungry in the first place?

Don't we have anything good to eat?

Have you ever wondered why we get cravings?

When you’re hungry….do you know what you’re really hungry for?

Are you hungry for magnesium? -for L-lysine? -for niacin? -for eicosapentaenoic acid?

See -your body need all sorts of fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, water and nutrients to do its job. And, when the blood stream is lacking the necessary ingredients for nourishment, the brain releases a flood of hormones to prepare the digestive system for food. This preparatory period is when we typically say our ‘stomach is growling.’

The hormones initiated in the hypothalamus prime your stomach and your intestines to begin secreting digestive fluids. These digestive fluids are absolutely necessary for proper digestion and nutrient absorption because without them…. whatever food is eaten isn’t properly digested and the body never gets the nutrition it really needs.

This can be we a problem for many of us.

Remember the old saying… ‘Use it or Lose it?’

Because of the lack of fresh, whole foods in the typical western diet -and because of the abundant processed foods that many consume, people have grown deficient in the appropriate digestive fluids…. and that’s a real problem!

Remember…. when the body is lacking nutrients in the blood stream, the brain sends out the ‘hunger signal’ and that rumbling in your tummy begins. You start foraging for food because you think your belly is empty ...Not True!

You don’t need that slice of (whatever you just grabbed)! You might only be deficient in a few key nutrients….

You don’t need more food! -You simply need to digest the fresh, whole food you’ve just eaten more efficiently!

Do you see how this can easily spiral out of control?

You think you’re hungry, so you eat what’s close or what’s convenient ….and maybe that’s enough …and maybe it’s not. Most likely, it’s not. Most likely, whatever you just ate is not what you need -but rather what ‘sounded good’ at the moment. Soon you will be hungry again -because your body is still lacking the essential nutrients it needs.

If our diets lack what we need ….then we will always feel hungry, dissatisfied, sick, tired, cranky, moody ….and we’ll have cravings for food that isn’t what we need –but food that temporarily makes us ‘feel better.’

Food can do both….

Food can make us happy, healthy, energetic and satisfied…

Or….food can make us ‘feel good’ ….but only temporarily…then we feel guilty, fat, ugly, kind of sick, tired and eventually ….unhappy, unsatisfied and the cycle begins again.

Without the appropriate digestive fluids, the body is not receiving the nutrition it needs to function optimally.

But of course -we have the solution!
